Idea: Mastodon bot for the store?

Noelia Ruiz

Hello:

I'm thinking about an idea, though I don't know if it will be a
reality ornot. I'll think if this maybe useful or not.
But we may create a bot to send notifications about updates in the store.
I like Mastodon much more than Twitter, and Pinafore is really
comfortable to use Mastodon with NVDA, though the Official webpage of
servers can also be used.
I bring up this here in case someone wants to provide feedback, or
maybe that a bot already exists and I don't know about it.
This info maybe useful to create a bot, though this doesn't replace
human conversations:

https://www.bentasker.co.uk/posts/blog/software-development/writing-a-simple-mastodon-bot-to-submit-rss-items.html

Cheers.

As far as I know, Mastodon does not as easily allow people to set up their own notifications on updates from
one account or find notifications that happened before they start looking. My personal solution is to post my
announcements of project updates to a Telegram channel, set up a discussion group in Telegram that is linked
to that channel, then have the channel announcements automatically post to Twitter for people to find if they
don't use Telegram.

For a group of people who specifically want to follow notifications, Mastodon probably works well enough. I
confess I have never used that platform though. For Twitter, perhaps surprisingly, both Tweesecake and TWBlue
still work as of this writing, according to what I was told as recently as yesterday.

Finally, a bit more detail on my first claim about Mastodon: I understand that Mastodon consists of users and
nodes, and each user may have an account on any node or nodes. I imagine most users just prefer to have one
account on one node. But then, if you post your announcements on your node and I am on a different one, what I
can see of your announcements is up to the owners of both nodes. On Twitter, you post and I choose whether to
see the posts, and there is no one in the middle making choices for me.

Hey Doug,

I guess I could say it's the best of both worlds, with Mastodon not being controlled by a big corporation and thousands of instances scattered throughout the net. In order to follow a topic or person, it's either hashtags or exact username matches based on what node they're on. For instance, for those who want to follow me, it would be @ChrisDuffley@.... You can of course search for it that way, or directly on your own instance, by doing instance_url/@username@domain and you can see what was cached on that node there. But yes, the second point about controlling who can be there is also true, as that can be restricted. Most of the time, though, it's not, but domains can either be silenced (versions earlier than 4.1)/limited (version 4.1 and later) or suspended, which means no interaction between the node and that domain can occur. Silenced/limited means that nothing will be cached publicly on that domain (meaning other users won't see their stuff publicly except if the user follows the limited person).

I hope this helps some - you can always email us off-list or communicate however else if you need things clarified.

I prefer Mastodon since there I don't receive advertisements selected
by algorythms, and it's possible to choose different instances if I
have a problem in the server where my account is registered.
My experience is good, and a couple of times I reported issues and get
a reply in the next hours.
I've seen that some instances lock other server due to rules, for
example hate speech.
I can make a test trying to create a bot and then see what happens. If
I do it, I'll inform here.

I've not tried this platform yet. I do tend to find that social media in general is a huge waste of time. Sadly with twitter losing a lot of the hard gained accessibility due to a certain tycoons opinionated policies, , I only use it when I need to contact some company by means other than non answered emails. If bots are possible on Mastodon, are we not going to see a lot of rubbish on there as well. I've never tried setting up an account, so don't know if anyone important is on it.

an option to indicate that it's a bot, and for now it will be just for

Hope they aren't automatically reported as spam. For any other

Hey Doug,

I guess I could say it's the best of both worlds, with Mastodon not being

controlled by a big corporation and thousands of instances scattered

throughout the net. In order to follow a topic or person, it's either

hashtags or exact username matches based on what node they're on. For

instance, for those who want to follow me, it would be

@ChrisDuffley@...

<https://mastodon.chrisduffley.com/@ChrisDuffley>. You can of course
search

for it that way, or directly on your own instance, by doing

instance_url/@username@domain and you can see what was cached on that
node

there. But yes, the second point about controlling who can be there is
also

true, as that can be restricted. Most of the time, though, it's not, but

domains can either be silenced (versions earlier than 4.1)/limited
(version

4.1 and later) or suspended, which means no interaction between the node
and

that domain can occur. Silenced/limited means that nothing will be cached

publicly on that domain (meaning other users won't see their stuff
publicly

except if the user follows the limited person).

I hope this helps some - you can always email us off-list or communicate

however else if you need things clarified.

Hey there!

Not a problem!

I think it's under Account or something. I haven't looked there in a while. No worries.

I do know that Mastodon has an API for sending data, but not sure about parcing data, plus, and I'll emphasize, I know only super basic Python at the moment and can't do much with it. Though I could see it possible to do via a small app that could run by looking up and pulling the new data, and then only sending it if modifications were made.

Thanks.

@ChrisDuffley@...

Thanks.
For now I have a repo with GitHub Actions that looks for
modifications. My idea is that, if more than an add-on is modified, we
just inform about this fact without processing the metadata. If just
an add-on is updated, we can process properties to provide the
homepage and download URL. Here's the repo, with lots of dirty commits
for testing online with GitHub Actions:

https://github.com/nvdaes/nvdaStoreMastodonBot

I have found an action to send toots in Mastodon, so I'll need to
configure the account and starting making tests with a fake store.
If this idea is not appropriate for any reason let me know or feel
free to provide feedback to improve.
