Hello Joseph,

Regarding Resource Monitor:

Is it possible to have it announce the strength of the currently connected wifi as well as the name of that wifi?

Daniel

Emne: [nvda-addons] Enhanced Touch Gestures and Resource Monitor June 21st development snapshot

Hi all,

Enhanced Touch Gestures and Resource Monitor June 21st development snapshots are on their way (they will show up in about ten minutes).

Changelog:

Enhanced Touch Gestures:

  • Requires NVDA 2020.1 or later.
  • Right mouse click gesture (tap and hold) is no longer part of this add-on; it is now part of NVDA as of 2020.1.
  • If coordinate beep announcement is on (controlled by “play mouse coordinates” option in mouse category), NVDA will no longer play beeps as you explore the touch keyboard or modern input facility such as emoji panel via touch.
  • NVDA will no longer appear to do nothing or play error tones if trying to toggle touch keyboard (four finger flick right) if “touch keyboard” button isn’t showing on the screen.

Resource Monitor (second dev build):

  • Simplifies Windows 10 version announcement when NVDA+Shift+6 is pressed (Windows 10verYYMM vs. Windows 10 YYMM) for consistency with Windows Server releases and to prepare for Version 20H2 (later this year).

In order to use development snapshots, you must be running NVDA 2020.1 or later and the desired add-on must be checked from “prefer development releases” list, found under NVDA menu/Preferences/Settings/Add-on Updater, and must be comfortable testing possibly bleeding-edge code (people using Windows 10 App Essentials will know what I’m talking about). Changes listed above will eventually end up in next stable release (early July).

Cheers,

Joseph

Try removing addon speech history manually. To do this, open the personal folder% username, search for the app-data item, find Roaming there, then click on NVDA and the addons folder there. If you have Windows 10, run Microsoft narator Win + CTRL + enter.

Re: NVDA 2020.2 and Joseph Lee's add-ons: compatibility testing in progress, Windows 10 App Essentials dropping support for NVDA 2019.3 soon

Hi all,

All my add-ons are compatible with upcoming 2020.2.

Some important updates:

  • NVDA 2019.3 compatibility: as of version 20.07 (July), the following add-ons will drop support for NVDA 2019.3.1 or earlier: Add-on Updater, Enhanced Touch Gestures.
  • Enhanced Touch Gestures: version 20.07 is indeed on its way. This version resolves important issues with touch keyboard support and will require NVDA 2020.1 or later. Also, coordinate beep announcement might be removed in a future release, as the feature was found to be not that helpful (more on that once 20.07 comes out).

Cheers,

Joseph

Hi all,

In case you missed it: NVDA 2020.2 beta 1 was released for testing. Now is the time to make sure add-ons are ready for the upcoming release.

In regards to my add-ons:

  • Compatibility: yes, although I’m doing tests to make sure my add-ons are ready for 2020.2.
  • Windows 10 App Essentials: another policy I invoke which wasn’t done for a while is dropping support for old NVDA releases – the add-on supports current and immediate past releases. I skipped this for 2019.3 due to massive changes between 2019.2.1 and 2019.3. Now that 2020.2 is going through beta testing phase, support for 2019.3 will end soon – this won’t happen until at least two weeks after 2020.2 stable version is released. Also, upcoming version 20.07 (July) will require Windows 10 Version 1909 (November 2019 Update) or later (that is, 1909, 2004, 20H2, 21H1 preview).

Cheers,

Joseph

Re: Addon Compatibility Phrasing

Noelia Ruiz

Hi, since NV Access announced his intention to work in the translation
system and add-ons review and publication when Nvda 2020.2 beta work
is done, I think we should propose that compatibility statement is
reviewed as part of the documentation. For example, if an author
declares an add-on compatible with NVDA 2019.3 but NVDA 2020.1 doesn't
break compatibility, reviewers should suggest to declare
compatibility: 2019.3 or later. Even, a documentation template based
on manifest.ini may be filled for this if possible.
I am not sure if we should suggest this in add-on store repo, though
maybe better to wait for NV Access to start working on this. If they
work on the system as a whole, maybe a chance for the website too. I
agree with Joseph in the fact that authors have aucthority about
add-ons; anyway, websites or stores using a server which doesn't
belong to us may set policies about format of documentation and
requirements for consistency, so that visitors know how to search and
the criteria followed for the website, just when someone sends a
publication to a newspaper, blog etc.
Just my two cents for this.

Dear NVDA Add-ons community,

The suggestion I am about to make originates from an observation I made when

going through the Phonetic Punctuation add-on page at
https://addons.nvda-project.org/addons/phoneticPunctuation.en.html.
One of the lines mentioned here is "• NVDA compatibility: 2019.3."
* Prima faci, it seems like NVDA version 2019.3 is the only version for
which this add-on is designed. That is the direct implication of this
phrasing. However, my intuition says that this is unlikely to be true.
* Perhaps this add-on is compatible with NVDA version 2019.3 and later or
NVDA version 2019.3 and earlier. If it is either of these, then it is
imperative that "and earlier" or "and later" be specified.

I have not browsed the pages of enough add-ons to yet to comment on whether

this is a general problem, or if it is specific to this one add-on.
Furthermore, if my intuition is incorrect and Phonetic Punctuation, in fact,

works only with NVDA version 2019.3, then what I am pointing out is a
non-issue. However, if that is not the case, I sincerely request add-on
community members to consider using clearer phrasing to indicate
compatibility on the NVDA community add-ons portal.

Thanks.

Subject: [nvda-addons] Basis for Ordering Add-ons on Website

Dear NVDA add-ons community,

As someone who has been perusing through the NVDA community add-ons portal recently, as may be evident from my recent flurry of mails on this group, I have noticed some slight disorder in the arrangements of addons on the website.

To elaborate briefly, it feels like there isn't a clear-cut pattern followed in ordering the add-ons from the top to the bottom of the homepage of the NVDA community add-ons portal. One possible metric for sorting could be alphabeticization. However, I would like to advocate another factor on which add-ons should be ordered on the homepage:
latest compatible NVDA version.
I think it is reasonable to make the following two assertions:
* The amount of users of each NVDA version decreases as we go back in time, i.e. NVDA 2020.1 commands a larger user base than 2019.3 and so on.
* The add-ons shown at the top of the page get greater visibility than those lower down in the list.
Given this, we ought prioritize those add-ons which, purely in terms of NVDA version compatibility, hold relevance and thus appeal to a greater number of NVDA users.

To be clear, there may well be a specific factor which determines ranking of add-ons on the website, which I am unaware of. If that is so, please let me know what it is, and why it is a good criterion.

The add-ons website is very neatly designed as is, but I was just thinking of ways to improve it even further.

Thanks.

Hi Joseph,

I am unable to immediately comment on whether this add-on exhibits this issue when using NVDA 2020.1. However, after updating to 2020.2 Beta 1, I can confirm that prior to the installation of this add-on, I was able to adjust NVDA's volume in the Volume Mixer without any hitches, and the problem began only after installing the add-on. In other words, for NVDA version 2020.2 Beta 1, I am reasonably confident that it is this add-on which is causing the issue. Just to clarify, do you recommend contacting Tony privately about this, or should I wait for him to read this message on the list and respond whenever he gets a chance?

Thanks.

Dear all,

I am not sure what the best means of sharing a bug report for an
add-on is, i.e. whether reporting it publicly is appropriate, or if
one should reach out to the add-on author personally. For now, I will
be defaulting to the former.

After installing the latest stable version of Tony's enhancements,
with NVDA
2020.2 Beta 1, and on a Windows 8.1 system, I am facing the following
issue:
* Open the Volume Mixer in Windows.
* Tab to the Volume for NVDA Application slider.
* Attempt to increase or decrease it using the arrow keys or Page Up
and Page Down.
Expected Result: Value of slider will change.
Actual Result: The value changes for an instant but immediately
reverts to the original value, netting out to no change at all.
Note: Pressing the add-on's keystrokes of NVDA+Ctrl+Page Up/Page Down
work fine.

It would be useful if other users of this great add-on could check if
they can replicate this issue on their systems and report their
results to the list. Comments and diagnoses from add-on developers
would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

Subject: [nvda-addons] Issue Downloading Image Describer

Dear all,

When I click on the Stable Version link on the add-on page for Image
Describer, instead of being displayed a file download dialog on Firefox as I
am for any other downloadable files, I get the following
message:
"This XML file does not appear to have any style information associated with
it. The document tree is shown below.
<Error>
<Code>UserProjectAccountProblem</Code>
<Message>User project billing account not in good standing.</Message>
<Details> The billing account for the owning project is disabled in state
closed </Details> </Error>"

I have only attempted to download a few add-ons in the past hour from the
NVDA community add-ons portal, and among those, this issue has been unique
to Image Describer.

I would truly appreciate any assistance with this.

Thanks.

Re: Issue With Tony's enhancements Add-on

Bhavya shah

Hi Joseph,

I am unable to immediately comment on whether this add-on exhibits
this issue when using NVDA 2020.1. However, after updating to 2020.2
Beta 1, I can confirm that prior to the installation of this add-on, I
was able to adjust NVDA's volume in the Volume Mixer without any
hitches, and the problem began only after installing the add-on. In
other words, for NVDA version 2020.2 Beta 1, I am reasonably confident
that it is this add-on which is causing the issue. Just to clarify, do
you recommend contacting Tony privately about this, or should I wait
for him to read this message on the list and respond whenever he gets
a chance?

Thanks.

Hi,
Does this happen with NVDA 2020.1? If not, this might be something to report
to Tony after making sure it is his add-on that's causing this issue.

Subject: [nvda-addons] Issue With Tony's enhancements Add-on

Dear all,

I am not sure what the best means of sharing a bug report for an add-on is,
i.e. whether reporting it publicly is appropriate, or if one should reach
out to the add-on author personally. For now, I will be defaulting to the
former.

After installing the latest stable version of Tony's enhancements, with NVDA
2020.2 Beta 1, and on a Windows 8.1 system, I am facing the following
issue:
* Open the Volume Mixer in Windows.
* Tab to the Volume for NVDA Application slider.
* Attempt to increase or decrease it using the arrow keys or Page Up and
Page Down.
Expected Result: Value of slider will change.
Actual Result: The value changes for an instant but immediately reverts to
the original value, netting out to no change at all.
Note: Pressing the add-on's keystrokes of NVDA+Ctrl+Page Up/Page Down work
fine.

It would be useful if other users of this great add-on could check if they
can replicate this issue on their systems and report their results to the
list. Comments and diagnoses from add-on developers would be greatly
appreciated.

Thanks.

Re: Basis for Ordering Add-ons on Website

Hi,
Ordering is determined by creation date for add-on readme entries. This allows us to track when an add-on was first added to the website.
Cheers,
Joseph

Thanks.

I believe addons are organized by date released/last edited on the website.
